About Today: Happy Hindu New Year!

If you can't see this email, click here

About

Today's the day many Hindus usher in the new year and welcome the spring season! But the festivities are more complicated than you might think. Hindus in various states of India actually honor the new year in their own unique ways (and not all of the holidays even fall on today's date). Let's take a closer look at how they celebrate and then learn why even the Hindu belief system lacks the unity of most world religions.

For daily information and inspiration, follow About.com Religion & Spirituality on Facebook and Twitter.

Happy Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, and More!
Whether the Hindus of Kashmir call it Navreh or the Marathas call it Gudi Padwa, the Hindu New Year takes place around the start of the month of Chaitra, which says hello to spring. From cleaning and decorating their homes to wearing new clothes and baking tasty sweets, learn all of the ways Hindus start anew.

And Happy Vasanta Navaratri!
Today also marks the start of Vasanta Navaratri, also known as the nine holy nights of spring. Now through April 8, Hindus fast and worship Durga (the Mother Goddess).

Hinduism for Beginners
While Hinduism may lack a unified system of beliefs and ideas, the religion does believe in idol worship, reincarnation, and karma among other concepts. Hindus also emphasize non-violence, truthfulness, purity and generosity. Interested in learning more about the world's oldest extant religion? Start with these Hinduism basics for beginners.

A funny thing happened in Sydney, Australia while you were watching March Madness: the 2014 Major League Baseball season started, although most people will tell you that opening day, a veritable holiday for baseball fans, is still a couple days away.

Baseball in 2014: What to Watch For
If you're at all into baseball or even just curious what the big deal is, you should read what Baseball Expert Kevin Kleps predicts about the upcoming season. He'll tell you, for example, what we'll have to talk about for a whole season without Alex Rodriguez around.

Whose Idea Was the 7th-Inning Stretch?
On April 14, 1910 William Howard Taft became the first U.S. president to throw out the first pitch on opening day, starting a tradition. And that wasn't the only tradition the 300-pound Taft started that day, or so they say.

Why (Some) Athletes Use Steroids
You can't talk about baseball anymore without steroids coming up. Just when you thought baseball's "steroids era" was over, the Biogenesis scandal hit, and more than a dozen players, including A-Rod, were suspended. But what are steroids, and why do athletes use them in spite of the obvious risks?

About

From Hilary Pollack, your About Food Editor

What is it about strips of cured pork that keeps our mouths watering and inspires our culinary palates year after year? Perhaps its the perfect synthesis of sweetness, smokiness, and saltiness, or its ability to elevate almost any dish to a new level of rich, fatty deliciousness. Whether you're enjoying it solo, wrapped around more meat, or sprinkled in a sandwich, there's one thing for sure—bacon is truly beloved in the food world. And if you're a serious fan, consider joining a Bacon of the Month Club!.

The Basics of Bacon
Obviously, the first rule about enjoying bacon is to make sure that the bacon you're using is cooked well. We have tons of tips for both choosing and preparing bacon and cooking it so that it's crispy and full of flavor without being a greasy mess. Looking for a slightly more gourmet alternative? Try thick-cut marinated pork belly.

Meat on Meat
Unsurprisingly, bacon goes great with, well, other meaty treats, from chicken to sausages. Wrap just about any cut of meat with bacon before cooking it, and it will be infused with an extra-smoky savory flavor. Seriously, Bacon Cheeseburgers might just be one of the greatest inventions of our time.

Sweet and Smoky
In recent years, bacon has become increasingly popular as an addition to desserts and sweet dishes, making its way into everything from cupcakes to cocktails and ice cream. Tried and true, this is one trend that gets our seal of approval.

Just Add Bacon
Crumbled, sliced, or baked in, bacon enlivens everything from soups and sandwiches to snack foods. In fact, it would be easy to find a way to include bacon in just about every item on a menu. Try one of these recipes, which are just a few of our bacon faves from About.com's Food network.
