But it wasn't always this way and Pride month is a good time to reflect on how far we have come and where we still need work! | | How Gay Pride Benefits LGBTQ+ Teens We are now four decades into the concept of Gay Pride. Gay Pride is a movement that celebrates the GLBT community. This movement emerged in the 1960s. It came out of a time when mainstream society tended to view being LGBTQ+ as something shameful or inferior to being heterosexual. So what has been the legacy of forty years of pride been for today's GLBT teens? For on | What is Gay Pride? The term "Pride" was deliberately chosen counter the idea that there was something embarrassing or wrong with being gay. In many places, Pride occurs in June to commemorate the famous Stonewall riots. These riots occurred in 1969 as a response to homophobic raids that were happening at gay bars. During raids, police would drag people off to jail on fake charges, even if they weren't committing crimes. | A Brief History of Gay Pride Parades A New York City march, held on June 28, 1970, was the first gay pride march in the U.S., covering 51 blocks from Christopher Street to Central Park. Today, LGBT pride parades are held annually in multiple cities and countries throughout the world. The month of June is widely considered Gay Pride Month. | The Rainbow (Gay Pride) Flag The Rainbow (or Gay Pride) Flag was created by artist and vexillographer Gilbert Baker, a friend of the late Harvey Milk, in 1978. The flag debuted at the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. It has since been used around the world as a symbol of LGBT unity in many variations, including adaptations such as bumper stickers and decals. The Rainbow Flag is recognized by the International Congress of Flag Makers.
