From Ellen Friedrichs, your About Teen Life Editor
We all know how important it is to avoid sunburns, but sometimes they just happen. Case in point, I had my first beach trip today, thought I had liberally applied sunscreen and came home with ah pink back! Here's how to avoid that...

How Does Sunscreen Work?
Sunscreen combines organic and inorganic chemicals to filter the light from the sun so that less of it reaches the deeper layers of your skin. Like a screen door, some light penetrates, but not as much as if the door wasn't present. Sunblock, on the other hand, reflects or scatters the light away so that it doesn't reach the skin at all.

Sunscreen Allergy
Over the past 20 years, the dangers of sun exposure have been recognized, from sun-damaged skin to skin cancer. As a result, the use of sunscreens has become a routine part of our daily lives. This has led to various allergic reactions to the chemicals found in sunscreens. Most of these allergic reactions represent contact dermatitis.

How to Choose the Best Sunscreen
If you have ever been to the sunscreen aisle at your local drugstore, you know how overwhelming it can be: SPF this, UVA that and then throw in UVBs in the mix and the sunscreen confusion begins!

Is a Higher SPF Level the Best Option in Sunscreen?
There are many misconceptions with sunscreen. You have those people who think that getting the highest SPF will protect them better than a lower SPF. Then, there are those who won't use sunscreen with a high SPF because they think they won't get a tan.
